#55 Return of the match
You’re lighting candles/the barbecue/your fireplace. What do you reach for? The lighter that grazes your thumb? Or the old-school flick and fizzle of striking a match? We won’t pretend that matches aren’t without their own environmental impact, but FYI the majority of lighters bought today are disposable. According to Bic, they alone produce 6 million every day.19 That’s a lot of plastic that will eventually end up somewhere.
#56 That’s rubbish
There are a couple of things you can do when it comes to lining your trash cans. First, the ideal would be to stop using garbage bags altogether—if you have a good recycling system in your part of town, then all your wet smelly items would go in your food waste container (for which you can buy compostable bags made from cellulose) and then your recyclable waste and the rest of your garbage can go in their respective bins without a bag. If for whatever reason this isn’t going to work for you, you can buy garbage bags online or in most supermarkets that are made from recycled plastic, which is at least cutting back on some of the plastic being sent to landfill.
